I got
Eddie in August 2000 at the tender age of 6 weeks old. His mum was a
Hancross bred lurcher – this is half collie, half greyhound and his
dad was a GSD. At the time I was told that the GSD was a pet of one
of the workmates of the “breeder” who worked at a scrap yard.
Various Eddie traits and a conversation with the ”breeders” wife
have led me to believe that the GSD was actually the guard dog at
the scrap yard!!!
Eddie
is a misunderstood lad who shows a very different side to his
personality at agility. For those of you who know him from training
or shows you will have seen a gobby, snappy hooligan however come to
my house and you will see the true Eddie – a quiet and unbelievably
lazy softie (see picture) – in bed is where you will find him 90%
of the time – he only sleeps and eats at home – obviously uses all
his energy for agility!!!
His
agility career had a slow start due to an unbelievable amount of
injuries (he was quite accident prone as a puppy) but eventually he
stopped jumping up and biting me after every jump and is turning
into a consistent and reliable jumping dog who won me out of
starters in May 2003 just before his 3rd birthday. He
went on to win another 2 starter classes before we couldn’t do
anymore just to prove it wasn’t a fluke!! We still need to do some
work on his contacts but that is coming now – he gets his ups and
I’m sure if my brain and body would work together he would get his
downs in competition too!! With a good deal of excellent training
(thanks Nikki) Eddie now goes on ahead of me rather than sticking by
my side like the mummy’s boy he is, turns on a sixpence and forgives
a multitude of handling errors but the best thing of all is the fact
that he enjoys training and competing better than anything else and
if he’s happy then I’m happy.
